How to Tell if It’s Gum Pain or Tooth Pain?

September 15, 2025

Toothaches and gum pain can feel very similar, but knowing the difference helps you understand what treatment you may need.

Signs It’s Tooth Pain

  • Sharp or Throbbing Pain – Often localized to a single tooth.

  • Sensitivity to Hot or Cold – Lingering discomfort after temperature changes may point to decay or nerve issues.

  • Pain When Chewing – Pressure-related pain usually suggests a cavity, cracked tooth, or infection.

Signs It’s Gum Pain

  • Red, Swollen, or Bleeding Gums – Often linked to gingivitis or gum disease.

  • Soreness Around Several Teeth – Gum pain tends to be more widespread than tooth pain.

  • Bad Breath or Bad Taste – These can signal infection in the gums rather than the tooth.

Sometimes, both tooth and gum pain happen together, for example, with an abscess that affects both the tooth root and surrounding tissue. If pain persists, it’s best to get a professional evaluation.
