Should I Take Antibiotics After a Root Canal?

September 24, 2025

In most cases, you do not need antibiotics after a root canal. A root canal’s purpose is to remove the infected pulp inside the tooth, clean it thoroughly, and seal it to prevent further infection. Once this is done, antibiotics are usually unnecessary because the source of infection has already been eliminated.

When Antibiotics May Be Needed:

  1. Severe or Spreading Infection – If the infection has spread beyond the tooth into the jaw or surrounding tissues.

  2. Compromised Immune System – Patients with certain medical conditions may need extra protection against infection.

  3. Persistent Swelling or Fever – If symptoms don’t improve after the procedure, your dentist may prescribe antibiotics.

The Bottom Line

For a routine root canal, healing typically involves mild soreness that can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers, not antibiotics. However, your dentist will evaluate your situation and prescribe medication only if it’s truly necessary.
